05-16-09 Long day to Tsuno

Day 8 Photoset

Our goal for today was to make it all the way to the town of Mimitsu, unfortunately that turned out to be about 10km too far for us. So we ended up in the town of Tsuno instead. It was a long, tiring day today. Pretty boring compared to yesterday. We saw some cranes standing around in rice fields, and we ate some breakfast on the beach, but that was about it.

The highlight of the day came at the very end. We arrived in Tsuno tired and hungry and we were having a bit of trouble finding a place to eat. I saw a man out watering plants in his yard, so I asked him if we were close to any restaurants. He told me that there was a place just about 50m further down the road and to the right. Risa and I said thank you and walked over there, only to find that it was closed.

The man, whose name I never found out, came walking up and started talking about an Udon restaurant near the main shrine in town. He said that we could also camp at the shrine, since its pretty common for surfers to camp there during the summer. Then he offered to give us a ride! Since we were fairly tired, we took him up on his offer. We are lucky we did, because when we got to the Udon place, it was closed as well! The man was surprised, so he got out and knocked at the door. Turns out, the restaurant closes at 4pm, and we had arrived at 4:30. However, the man was friends with the woman who owns the restaurant and he got her to agree to open her doors for us! Miyazaki people are soooo nice!

So we ate some good Udon, and we bought some Onigiri and chocolate from her as well. Now we are camping in the shrine, planning to continue our walk to Mimitsu tomorrow. The forecast is for rain tomorrow, so we might just stop at Mimitsu and spend time in an Onsen and then stay at the local Hostel.

05-15-09 Back in the saddle (literally), and the kindness of strangers

Day 7 Photoset

After a long period of R&R in the city of Miyazaki, we finally were back on the road today.

We left the hotel around 10:30, which is pretty late, but still gave us enough time to get to our target for the day. We went north through Miyazaki following a road that was about 5 blocks parallel to hwy10. Taking the path less traveled really paid off for us today, as we got to meet several great people.

The first encounter was with a taxi driver who had pulled over and was waiting for us near a bridge. He walked with us for a few minutes, asking where we were going etc… When we said we were walking all the way to Tokyo, he told us he spent some time walking with another traveler who was going all over Japan. Then he got back in his taxi and drove off. It was a little strange, but as we soon learned, people in Miyazaki Prefecture are super nice and just like to talk and help out.

Further down the road we past by a small horse coral. The man who runs the place, Mr. Fukuda, called us over and asked if we wanted to look at the horses. Of course we said yes! He showed us a little pony named Po-chan and another horse whose name escapes me. After hearing about our plans and getting over his original disbelief, he asked us if we would like to ride one of the horses that was out in the coral. Of COURSE we want to ride a horse! So Risa and I each got to ride on ‘Sky’ while Fukuda led him around. We got a quick lesson in how to hold the reigns and how to gently kick the horses sides to get him to go, etc… It was really fun!

The horse experience made our day, but it was only the beginning! As we continued north, we entered Sadowara Town. A woman on a bicycle rode up behind us and told us that she owned a cafe near the bridge over the river. She said that if we stopped by she would treat us to some coffee!

It took a while, but we eventually made it to her cafe and she wasn’t lying about treating us! Mrs. Nei not only gave us coffee, but also kept bringing us watermelon slices! She even spent some time going over the maps with us, and telling us about some good places to camp. I guess the owner of the cafe and her like to lend a helping had to any travelers passing through. A while ago there were a couple of people who were walking from Fukuoka to Miyazaki, and today was the two of us.

We spent about an hour at her cafe, but it was starting to get a little late and we still had a couple hours ahead of us if we wanted to get to our target campground before dark. So we packed up and said our goodbyes and we were once again on our way.

The campground we planned to stay at is currently closed (read: Free), but that also might mean no water. So as we approached, we decided to stop by at a little store and ask if we could fill our waterbottles. The nice shop lady filled our bottles and Risa told her we were going to the campground for the night.

We thought that was the end of it, but after setting up our tent at the campground, that same shop lady came driving up. She wanted to make sure we made it safely and that we were able to set up the tent. She also brought us 5 fresh tomatoes! Then she said goodbye and drove off. So nice! WE LOVE MIYAZAKI! We are camping at a real campground for the first time. Tondahara Campground. Its nice, it has a huge sports field, swimming pool (closed), running water, and tiny little tent area. There is a guy practicing French Horn next to the field.

05-14-09 RIP Brook the cat

Last night I learned that my pet cat Brook who has lived with my family for 15 years had died. She was a great cat. Never mean to anyone, always enjoyed being petted and sitting in peoples laps. She was super fat, but quite healthy. She lived a good life, spending much of her last few years tucked into the corner of the couch sleeping the day away, or sitting on my dads lap getting her ears scratched. She was somewhere between 17 and 21 years old. We got her from the shelter and I can’t remember how old she was when we got her. RIP Brook!

Day 6 Photoset

It kindda bummed me out and we could use an extra day to plan our route ahead, so we decided to stay one more day in Miyazaki.

We went for a walk around the city, and we went to a small foot onsen, but other than that, it was a pretty quiet day. Our route for the next 3 days planned pretty good now. We are going to head north along the coast, with our 3 day target being the town of Nobeoka. We found some campgrounds and hotels along the route that we can use if needed, but I am hoping to save some money and just camp on the beach if possible.

05-13-09 Sightseeing in Miyazaki

Day 5 Photoset

The rental car place picked us up at 8am sharp, and by 8:30 we were on the road and heading to our first destination of the day, Udo Jinja.

Udo Jinja is built inside a shallow cave on the coast, and like most shrines in Japan, is famous for having some kind of specific blessing. In this case, it is the power to bless women with easy child birth. The old folk story of this shrine is that the rocks represent the breasts of Emperor Jimmu’s mother. The water that gets collected from the cave is called Ochichi-mizu or “Breast Water.” Drinking it will bestow upon you the blessings of the shrine.

If drinking rock boob water isn’t your thing, there are other options. You can pay a dollar to get 5 little clay balls which you throw off a cliff and into a small pool of water. If you can get all 5 into the pool, your wish will come true. I tried, and I only managed 2.5 out of 5.

When we were done at Udo Jinja we decided to go check out the castle ruins in the town of Obi. On paper this was supposed to be a simple case of, “there used to be a castle here, now its a small museum and some old walls. Spend 30minutes and continue on your way.” We didn’t get out of there for 4 hours. Obi is a wonderful little city!

Like Chiran, Obi has a well preserved Samurai neighborhood. Several of the houses are open for viewing, but unlike in Chiran, you can actually go inside these houses. It was really fun wandering the old traditional Japanese houses and trying to picture what each room might have looked like when people lived there. It’s a little hard to guess what a room was used for, since in many cases the rooms are almost all the same size. Was this room a living room or a bedroom? Where did the master sleep? What’s the bathroom like?!

Obi is particularly proud of their most famous resident, Jutaro Komura. I had never heard of him before today, but he was a major player in the rise of Japan on the world stage of politics. He successfully negotiated an end to the Russia-Japanese war, and helped increase ties with America and Great Britain in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. We learned about all of this while wandering around the Komura Memorial Hall. The lady who worked there thought that Risa and I were an interesting couple, so she came over and asked if she could take our picture to put on the Memorial Hall’s website. So without further adieu, I give you our first taste of celebrity! It’s not quite a newspaper article, but its getting closer!

Walking around Obi was a lot of fun, and we were seeing lots of cool Japanese history, but we eventually had to leave. That is, until Risa found out that for $3 we could shoot a traditional Japanese bow and arrow. We couldn’t leave without trying THAT!

We each paid our $3, and the helpful man showed us how to fire this particular bow. The bow we were going to shoot required us to be sitting, and the target was going to be about 30ft away. It sounded easy, but it was actually pretty hard!

The arrows are super long, and when you first load them, the front point bounces around everywhere. You have to be very still, and then just sort of aim with the tip of the arrow and hope you have the right angle. We also weren’t given any arm guards, so the first couple of shots resulted in some nice bruises on the inside of our left forearms as the bow string snapped forward. But once we learned the proper wrist rotation to get the arm out of harms way, the target practice was really fun and much less painful.

In case you are wondering, more of my arrows hit the target, but Risa was the only one to get a bull’s-eye!

Aoshima Jinja was our next stop. Not too much to talk about with this one. Its a pretty shrine that is built on an island next to the town of Aoshima. I guess the Tokyo Giants baseball team visits this shrine before every baseball season to pray for victory.

We are now back in the hotel and doing our laundry. We want to start walking up the coastline tomorrow, but we might end up staying one more day here. I guess we will figure it out in the morning.

05-12-09 We’re In Miyazaki

Day 4 Photoset

I felt a little guilty about taking a train today. But the blister on my left foot reminded me that we had always intended to occasionally take a bus or train. We are going to spend at least 2 days in Miyazaki, then we intend to start walking up the cost towards Beppu. So the walking will continue!

However, before we start the next walking segment, we need to rest up and enjoy this new area of Kyushu. Rest comes first, so we didn’t do too much today. We checked in to a hotel (another awesome bargain discovered by Risa!), then went to the grocery store across the street where we bought a ton of really awesome food at rock bottom prices.

It’s really hot here, so we sat in the hotel room for a few hours while we waited for the sun to go down a bit. Then we left the hotel and started to explore our new city.

The first things we noticed was all the great little restaurants around our hotel. Besides the amazing grocery store, there were tons of cheap little places with delicious looking local specialties like Chicken Namban, Mehikari, and Reijiru. Our first impression is that we love Miyazaki!

After being impressed by the food selection, we walked down to the river and followed the shore for a while. The river that bisects Miyazaki is huge, and has an amazing path along the shore that includes a mini river, and large open grassy areas. The river seems to be the main place to walk your dog, or go for a run. I can’t say that I blame them. The temperature was perfect, warm but with a cool breeze. We love Miyazaki!

Our dinner tonight was at one of the local places we past by earlier. We ordered the local specialties and were not disappointed. Everything was fantastic! Did I mention that we love Miyazaki?

Tomorrow we are going to rent a car. There are several major attractions south of the city that are considered a “must see” so we are going to see them all! Oh, and I know that there are a couple of you who hear, “rent a car in Japan” and you think of THIS. But in reality, we are getting one of THESE. Sorry to disappoint!
