06-22-09 Naoshima. Go the for the art, stay for the beaches!
Posted in Trip North on 07/04/2009 04:51 am by ScottRisas brother told us about Naoshima island before we left. It is an “Art” island, famous for several sculptures by Japanese artist Kusama Yayoi and a large museum/hotel known as “Binesse Museum”.

The sculptures are interesting, and the museum was cool, but overall I think the art is a little overrated. My highlight of the museum was in the gift shop where they were trying to sell duct tape wallets for… wait for it…. $60. Ha! Shanon, start selling your wallets in Japan!

The real benefit of this island is the fact that it’s beautiful and there are several empty beaches next to excellent swimming areas.

We went here on a day-trip, thinking that we would see some art and then head back. But what we didn’t expect was the awesome beach we had all to ourselves! Our only regret was that we didn’t bring our swimming suits since the weather report said rain. Of course, once on the island the sun came out and it was super hot.

Being a male, it was much easier for me to jump in and enjoy the water. Risa limited herself to wading in knee deep and playing with the fish in the shallow water.

We seemed to time things perfectly, because as soon as we caught the bus back to the port, the clouds rolled in and it looked like rain was imminent.
Tomorrow we will be in Kobe!
