06-21-09 Shodoshima – Movie Sets & Soy Sauce
Posted in Trip North on 07/04/2009 04:45 am by ScottBefore the tourism industry started promoting the olives, Shodoshima was famous for the movie 24 Eyes. It’s a story about an elementary school teacher who worked at a local school around the time of WW2. The movie was famous enough to warrant a bronze statue at the ferry terminal when we arrived. Since the movie is so famous, we wanted to go see the movie set’s replica village and the original school house.

It was fun to see an old Japanese school house. I’m not sure what I expected, but maybe I was a little surprised to see that it basically looked like a western school. We had fun looking at the classrooms, playing with the old toys and looking at the study materials. Risa even played a song on the organ.

After seeing the original building, we went to the replica village. It was neat, but neither of us had seen the movie, so it wasn’t quite the same as say, seeing the clock tower set from Back To the Future. However, one of the main buildings in the village was playing the movie on a loop, so we poked our heads in and watched for a while.

We explored a bit, ate some lunch, and then left to head back to the main town where we could finally take a look at those soy sauce factories.
After seeing these factories, all I can say is “Worst. Job. Ever.” Soy sauce production was incredibly labor intensive. Guys were smashing, mixing, and moving buckets of stuff all day. They spent all day, in a hot, humid and smelly building with tons of half naked dudes.

Although it might have been a crappy job, it was still pretty cool to learn about. They used an amazing array of wooden tools. Each factory had to have a whole section devoted to producing the wood containers and buckets. Surprisingly, it seemed to be very similar to making beer, as a big part of the processes is proper fermentation and temp/humidity management.
We toured a couple different factories before going back to the port to head back to Takamatsu. One night in the city, then we are planning a day trip to Naoshima.
